Rainbow Words

This year we are changing our approach to high frequency words in order to align with our Guided Reading curriculum.  We will be using a technique called Rainbow Words.  Each guided reading level has a corresponding set of words which we have color coded as follows:

• Level A = red = October/November

• Level B = orange = December/January

• Level C = yellow =  February/March

• Level D = green =  April/May

 

We will cover one set of words over 2 months.  Students will also have a CVC word family to learn each week.   Students will typically be tested on reading these words on the last Friday of each month.  We may have a quiz to see how they are progressing with their words earlier but their report card grade will be taken from their test. 

Our students will be using and working with these words daily at school.  However it is imperative that students also practice these skills at home EVERY DAY (even if it is just for 10 minutes)!  Knowing sight words will help your child become a better reader!
